Double and drafted sliver fed from a coiling device passes through a tubular guide to a coiling device which deposits the sliver in coils in a rotating sliver can. The tubular guide has a horizontal portion connected by a curved portion to a downwardly extending portion inclined to the horizontal portion and the guide is mounted on a shaft which rotates about a horizontal axis coinciding with the axis of the horizontal portion. Variations in tension in the sliver cause the shaft and the guide to rotate about the horizontal axis and the displacement is measured by an electrical sensor and used to control rotation of the sliver can. Pref. the electrical sensor includes a semi-circular screen which rotates with the shaft to cover or uncover a series of magnets and the number of uncovered magnets is sensed by a rotary device which produces a corresp. output signal to control via pref. an electromagnetic clutch a servo motor driving the sliver can.
