The position detector has a pivoting lever, movable over a preset angular range, whose movement is associated with an output current via a generator coupled to the pivot axis. The pivoting lever is divided into two, interconnected, partial levers (13, 20) with different pivot axes (8, 2). The first partial lever (13), with pivot axis (8) coupled to the generator (6), has a longitudinally shiftable slider (15). This slider engages a lost motion member (19), longitudinally mounted on the second partial lever (20). In at least one starting position of the pivoting movement both pivot axes of the partial levers and the centre axis of the slider lie in the same plane (16). Preferably the slider is in the form of an orthogonally protruding pin engaging a slot in the second partial lever. The common plane may also include the zero point of the pivoted range in the starting position.
