The vehicle axle having a differential casing(10) from which two axle tubes(44) extend, has the main body of the casing cast in one piece. The casing may be of aluminium or magnesium alloy & is cast around two sleeves(42). The sleeves house the inner ends of the axle tubes(44). The housing(28) of the differential unit is supported in the casing(10) by bearings(41). The bearings are received in seatings(39) machined in the trunnion flanges(12,13) of the casing. Bolted bearing caps(40), which are accessible from the side of the casing opposite to the input shaft(20), retain the bearings in place.
