A method for producing a sintered silicon carbide article of high density and mechanical strength comprising sintering in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of from 1900 to 2300 DEG C a shaped mixture of 100 parts by weight of finely divided silicon carbide powder, tar pitch in an amount to provide 4.2-6 parts by weight of carbon after carbonization and boron-containing component in an amount corresponding to 0.03 -0.15 parts by weight of boron.
