Salicylic acid derivatives of the formula I (see formula I) (R1 is succinimidoxy; unsubstituted or substituted hetaryl; OR5 where R5 is substituted or unsub- stituted cycloalkyl, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, phenyl or substituted methyleneamino; OR8 where R8 is hydrogen, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation, ammonium or organic ammonium; R2 and R3 are each C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C2-haloalkyl, C1-C4- alkoxy or C1-C2-haloalkoxy and/or C1-C4-alkyl- thio; R4 is ethynyl or unsubstituted or substituted vinyl; X is oxygen or sulfur; Z is nitrogen or methine) are used as herbicides and bioregulators.
