A substrate for cultivating plants, for example chrysanthemums, the substrate being accommodated in a holder, for example tray- and channel-shaped, and being formed by a cultivation layer which is arranged in the holder and in which the roots of the plant are to be accommodated, the cultivation layer being supported by a layer of filter material, with a layer of drainage material positioned beneath it, so that it is possible to use a cultivation layer which is 75% thinner, and excess irrigation water can be discharged via the filter mat into the drainage layer, while a shortfall of water is compensated for by moisture which remains in the filter material, which acts as a reservoir by capillary action.
