A method of recovering copper from a lixivant solution (316) used in leaching copper from ore materials (304). The metal ion containing liquid (322) is passed through a nanofiltration membrane system (346a346d) to produce a metal ion rich retentate and a permeate. The retentate may be saved for metal recovery or discarded. To purify the permeate and remove residual metal ions therefrom, it may thereafter be passed through one or more columns (410, 420) containing metal ion extracting materials, such as porous polymer beads having biomass materials therein.
