The machine cuts out recesses in wood where it is damaged or to accommodate connecting components etc. A protective cowl (1.5) can be provided, sliding in relation to the cutters (1.1a,1.1b) and spring-loaded (1.6a,1.6b) against a template (1.11) and thus against the workpiece (1.4). The template can contain openings identical with the shape of the cutters, for visual positioning on the workpiece. A mechanism generating up-and-down movement can be included, together with a driving motor.
