The extinguishing fluid e.g. water is atomised with a gas e.g. compressed air through a second substance jet so that the drips of extinguishing fluid produced have a mean diameter of less than 70 microns. The extinguishing fluid is supplied at a flow rate of between 2 and 16 l/min and gas is supplied at a pressure between 2 and 6 bar.
