Tris (C 6-12 alkyl) phosphates are prepared by (a) dehydrating a mixture of a C 4-5 saturated primary alcohol and an alkali metal hydroxide (b) reacting the resulting alkali metal C 4-5 alkoxide with a C 6-12 alkyl alcohol which is primary or secondary and is saturated to form the corresponding higher alkoxide and lower alcohol (c) removing the lower alcohol, and (d) reacting the alkali metal C 6-12 alkoxide with phosphorus oxychloride at a temperature up to 100‹ C. in the presence of a diluent which may be dibutyl ether or nonane. |
