PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape cassette with which the tape edge detection of a thin magnetic tape can securely be carried out. SOLUTION: At least one light shielding member of (a) to (g) is provided on optical paths L1 and L2 from a light emitting element P for detecting a tape edge at the side of a VTR to photosensors S1 and S2 for detecting a tape edge. In case that a magnetic tape T overlaps with the light shielding members (a) to (g) on the optical paths L1 and L2, the light transmittance of the side of the photosensors S1 and S2 is set as a predetermined value (1.2%) or less.
