PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose failure even on an apparatus unattached with a computer by setting a proper criterion according to a machine model, an installation environment, and an operation condition of an air-conditioning apparatus. SOLUTION: This failure diagnostic system has a monitoring means 3 for preserving various operation state data on an air conditioner 2 for a specific time N, and a control means 4 having a database 7 of a reference value constructed on the basis of the operation state data sent from the monitoring means 3 and a database 8 of the operation state data. The monitoring means 3 has a first timer means 32 for measuring the specific time N, and is constituted so as to send out only the operation state data selected by a prescribed data selecting rule to the control means 4 when the specific time N passes. The control means 4 is constituted so as to determine the cause of failure and the existence of the failure occurrence by comparing the operation state data sent out from the monitoring means 3 with the reference value read in from the database 7.
