PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly perform inserting, conveying, and centering motions of valuable sheets in a valuable sheet discriminating device. SOLUTION: When detection output at an entrance sensor 13 in the valuable sheets discriminating device is generated, a discrimination control device 56 moves a valuable sheet to its inside along a conveying passage 9 by driving a conveying device 8. When a start sensor 50 generates detection output, the discrimination control device stops movement of the conveying device 8, and the valuable sheet is retained at an alignment preparation position. Then, the discrimination control device 56 moves one of a lower conveying unit 31 and an upper conveying unit 32 from a contact position to a separation position by driving a mounting and removing device 42, and performs centering motion of the valuable sheet arranged on the lower conveying unit 31 by operating an aligning device 10. Further, the discrimination control device 56 returns one of the lower conveying unit 31 and the upper conveying unit 32 from the separation position to the contact position by operating the mounting and removing device 42, and conveys the valuable sheet to its inside by restarting the conveying device 8. The valuable sheet discriminating device can smoothly perform insertion of valuable sheets into an entrance 7, and conveyance and centering motion of the valuable sheets.
