1490366 Asphalt compositions CABOT CORP 16 Oct 1974 [16 Oct 1973 8 Aug 1974] 44753/74 Heading C3N [Also in Division C5] An asphalt composition comprises asphalt having dispersed therein a reinforcing filler composition consisting of a pelleted (a) mixture of carbon black having a BET-N 2 surface area of at least 40m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and a dibutyl phthalate absorption value of at least 60 cc./100 g. and an asphalt-miscible petroleum oil that is essentially non-volatile at temperatures below 325‹ F., the weight ratio of said carbon black to said oil being 100 : 5-60 : 40 and the amount of said reinforcing filler composition dispersed in said asphalt cement being sufficient to provide 10-70 parts by weight of said carbon black per 100 parts by weight of said asphalt. The asphalt composition may comprise asphalt cement or asphalt cement and mineral aggregate. The petroleum oil may have an asphaltene content of less than 5% by weight and is preferably a low viscosity asphalt of low asphaltene content or oil separated from high viscosity asphalts as the "maltene" or pentane soluble fractions thereof. The oil preferably contains less than 30% by weight saturated hydrocarbons. The mineral aggregate preferably comprises mixtures of rock and sand having the usual size characteristics. |
