The objective of the present invention is to provide a technique whereby a user can select a function which the user desires to expand, and whereby said function can be incorporated freely as necessary. This technique provides a function expansion device 3 which is interposed, with freedom to be attached and detached, between an image capturing device 1 which captures an image of a subject and acquires image data, and an interface device 2 which carries out communication of data with an external device, the function expansion device 3 being configured to expand the functions of the image capturing device 1. The expansion functions of the image capturing device 1 can be selected from at least one of: an image processing function for processing the image data; an operating environment maintaining function for maintaining the operating environment of the image capturing device 1; a transmission scheme changing function for changing an image data transmission scheme; and a subject recognition function for recognizing the subject from the image data. |
