PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which has small running friction, excellent film strength, lubricity and head touch characteristic, high running durability, decreases an increase in the running friction and decreases the clogging of a head by specifying the chemical components of a top coat film. CONSTITUTION:The film, consisting of a fatty acid and alcohol having the alkyl groups expressed respectively by R1COOH and R2OH is formed on a magnetic layer. R1 of the fatty acid is preferably a satd. straight chain alkyl group of 9-21C. The running friction increases critically when the carbon atoms of R1 are below 9 and the effect of vapor deposition as well as the uniformity of the film pressure and film quality are made poor when the carbon atoms exceed 21. The alcohol expressed by R2OH is incorporated into said film, where R2 is preferably the straight chain alkyl group of 10-22C. The running property and running durability are deteriorated when the carbon atoms of R2 are below 10 and the efficiency of vapor deposition is made poor when the carbon atoms exceed 22. |
