PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as an insecticide economically in good yield with easy operation without any problem of environmental pollution, by reacting an alpha-cyanobenzyl alcohol with a carboxylic acid halide under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-cyanobenzyl alcohol expressed by formula I (X1 and X2 each represent H or halogen atom) is reacted with a carboxylic acid halide expressed by formula II [R represents a group expressed by formula III or IV (R2 represents 2,2-dihalovinyl, 1,2,2,2-tetrahaloethyl, etc. when R1 is H; R2 represents methyl when R1 is methyl; Y represents H, halogen atom, lower alkyl, etc.; n is 1 or 2; R3 represents lower alkyl, lower haloalkyl, etc.; R4 is H; etc.); Z is halogen atom] to obtain the aimed compound expressed by formula V. The reaction is carried out in an aprotic organic solvent substantially immisci ble with water (example; toluene) in the presence of an alkaline aqueous solution and a phase transfer catalyst (example; onium compound, crown ethers) at -10-60 deg.C, preferably -10-30 deg.C. |
