A device for refrigerating a pipeline conveying a refrigerant comprises a hermetically sealed refrigerant circuit with a condenser (10) and a downstream choke element (20) connected to at least one pair of tongs (26; 26'). The jaws (28, 28'; 30, 30') of the tongs, when closed, form a tongs bit (40) in thermal connection with a pipe, and each jaw has a hollow body which functions as an evaporator as well as an inlet (32, 32'; 36, 36') and an outlet (34, 34'; 38, 38') for the refrigerant. The choke element consists of a thermostatic expansion valve (20) the sensor (64) of which measures the temperature of the refrigerant in the return line (68) leading from the tongs (26, 26') to the condenser (10).
