2.1. The object is to provide copolymers which make possible coatings of particularly good water resistance. 2.2. The copolymer is based on alkyl and hydroxyalkyl esters of alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and optionally copolymerisable vinyl monomers, has an acid number of from 20 to 50 and an OH number of from 40 to 90 and contains from 0.5 to 5% by weight, based on the weight of the monomers employed for its preparation, of one or more copolymerised perfluoroalkylethyl esters of alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids having 6 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety. 2.3.
