This invention concerns a) a cathode for an electrochemical cell, b) the actual electrochemical cell with associated cathode and c) the processing of the cathode before use. The invention deals with electrochemical doping of the electrode in a basic compound which is liquid at room temperature consisting of imidazolium chloride (or derivatives of this) or triazolium chloride (or derivatives of this) and aluminium chloride (30 < mol% AlCl3 < 50). The processing means that the polypyrrole electrode can subsequently be used in acid electrolytes which contain molten compounds of (1-X) imidazolium chloride (or derivatives of this) and/or triazolium chloride (or derivatives of this) and (X) AlCl3, where 0.5 < X < 0.6 (X = mol fraction). The invented electrochemical cell has improved cycling characteristics compared to corresponding electrochemical systems. The cell can be used in the range from room temperature up to 140 degrees C.
