The device has an energized conductor (SL) including ends having an input (2) and an output (3). The conductor is connected with a voltage indicator (4). A non-energized conductor includes ends having an input (5) and an output (6). The indicator is switched parallel to the energized conductor, where an output of the indicator is connected with the non-energized conductor. The indicator is established to be subjected above a predetermined limiting voltage of an irreversible alteration. An output of another voltage indicator (7) is connected with the energized conductor. The voltage indicators are designed as gas arresters. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting over voltage in an electric line.
