A machine (e.g. an articulated truck) has a friction service brake 68, and a retarder 42that is controlled based on a speed sensor 50 and a brake pedal position sensor 60. The speed can be of the vehicle, or of wheel, transmission or drive train revolutions. The retarder may be engaging when a percent retarding power (calculated by dividing a percentage of a requested brake power given by the pedal position by a reference retarding power given by a speed associated with the drivetrain, fig 6) is greater than approximately 7%-13% of a reference retarding power for a time period. An indication is given to an operator if an axle oil temperature is predicted (fig 10) to be above a threshold, the service brake is being abused, or to reduce gear. Changing signals to the retarder may be delayed. |
