A cryostat having a magnet arrangement comprising a HTS portion 5 having at least one HTS section 6 radially within an LTS portion 2 having at least one LTS section 3, 4. The cryostat controls the temperature of each portion independently. The portions are electrically isolated from one another. The HTS portion can be superconductingly short-circuited. The HTS portion may comprise: no current feed lines; a cylindrical sleeve, a ring or rings, potentially deposited on a cylindrical support body in layers; a solenoid formed of tape conductor. The LTS portion may be short-circuited by a superconducting switch and comprise two sections, one of which may perform shielding. The cryostat may have an outer helium tank for the LTS and an inner helium tank for the HTS, which may incorporate shielding. Alternatively, the HTS portion may be inside a vacuum chamber in the outer helium tank, which it may be connected to by a heat switch. A method of charging the magnet arrangement involves cooling the LTS portion below its transition temperature and charging it to an interim current, then cooling the HTS portion so it is inductively charged by the LTS, when the LTS section is at its operating current. |
