The present invention provides an organic EL element which sequentially comprises at least a positive electrode, a first hole transport layer, a second hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron transport layer and a negative electrode in this order, and which is characterized in that: the second hole transport layer contains an arylamine compound represented by general formula (1); and the electron transport layer contains a pyrimidine derivative represented by general formula (2). An organic EL element according to the present invention has a high efficiency, a low driving voltage and an especially long service life.
