In the production of alcohols from olefines and sulphuric acid, the alkyl sulphuric acid, which may be diluted, and may be neutralized or wholly or partly hydrolysed, or the alcohol with or without water separated therefrom, is extracted with certain solvents to remove unpleasant smelling polymers. The solvents employed are Edeleanu, furfurol, acetone or like extracts of mineral oils, and it is stated that paraffinum liquidum has previously been employed for this purpose. The boiling point range of the solvent should be sufficiently far from the boiling point of the alcohol. In examples, (1) alkyl sulphuric acid obtained by absorbing propylene in sulphuric acid is diluted and heated to 80 DEG C. for an hour to effect hydrolysis; the cooled solution is then shaken with three separate quantities of Edeleanu extract of a kerosene fraction; the purified isopropyl alcohol solution is fractionally distilled, the distillate being dried with potash and again distilled; (2) alkyl sulphuric acid obtained by absorbing isobutylene in 65 per cent sulphuric acid is neutralized with ammonia and fractionally distilled; the crude tertiary butyl alcohol passing over at 80 DEG C. is diluted with an equal volume of water and shaken with three separate quantities of Edeleanu extract of a spindle oil fraction, the purified alcohol being then dried and rectified.ALSO:In the production of alcohols from olefines and sulphuric acid, the alkyl sulphuric acid which may be diluted and may be neutralized or wholly or partly hydrolysed, or the alcohol with or without water separated therefrom, is extracted with certain solvents to remove unpleasant-smelling polymers.
