PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde copolymer scarcely including any residual monomer and having low viscosity.SOLUTION: A method for producing a furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde copolymer includes: a dissolution step to add paraformaldehyde to furfuryl alcohol and dissolve paraformaldehyde in furfuryl alcohol by stirring the mixture in an alkaline condition and at a heating temperature of 100°C or less; a polymerization step to achieve polymerization by adding an acid catalyst to the solution obtained in the dissolution step; and a distillation step to stop a polymerization reaction by adding alkalis to a polymerization solution obtained in the polymerization step and subsequently obtain a polymer composition including the furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde copolymer from which furfuryl alcohol is removed by distillation until furfuryl alcohol concentration gets to 1 wt.% or less. Viscosity of the obtained polymer composition including the furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde copolymer is 2,000 mPa s or less. |
