The invention provides lubricating compositions and methods of use thereof in man or in animals. Specifically, provided are lubricating compositions comprising effective amounts of chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronan, and optionally include N-acetyl D-glucosamine.

A method of lubricating a medical device for insertion into the body of a subject or a mucosal area of a subject, comprising applying to the medical device or the mucosal area of the subject in need an effective amount of a lubricating composition comprising an effective amount of chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronan.
