A weighted dumbbell or abdominal roller 2 having a housing 4, 34 which forms a substantially cylindrical envelope in a first configuration (fig 1). The dumbbell has two elongate handles 8 lodged in the housing and located along an axis of the housing. The handles are slidable in mutually opposite directions. The handles are lodged within the housing in a first configuration and extend outwardly of the housing in a second configuration, wherein the housing is rotatable about the handle axis. The outward sliding of the handles may be caused by springs (25, fig 3) mounted in each handle. The handles are preferably locked in the first configuration and released by rotating the handles about their axis, which may operate by engaging a latch on the handle with a non-rotatable part of the dumbbell. The handles may be released by a pushbutton mechanism acting on a latch on a handle. |
