505,086. Speedometers. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1937, No. 29656. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1936. [Class 106 (iii)] A tachometer comprises a centrifugally responsive weighted element 51 pivotally mounted on a rotatable driving member 38 for relative angular movement against the action of a longitudinally-coiled governor spring 54 anchored at one end 60 relatively to the driving member and connected at the other end 57 to the weighted element, and so arranged relatively to the latter that the effective component of its resistant force varies directly with the centrifugal force created when the angular position of the weighted element varies substantially uniformly with uniform variations of the rotational speed of the driving member. A flexible shaft from an engine camshaft may drive a squared member 40 coupled by a flat torsion spring 42 to a hollow spindle 45. The block 38, keyed to the spindle 45 by grub screws 37 carries pivotally a rectangular weighted frame 51 restrained by the spring 54 adjustable at 65. The movements of the frame are transmitted by linkage 69, 70, 72, and position vertically a spindle 73 having a jewel-bearing 89 engaging a spring-urged arm 87 on a shaft 86 which transmits the movements by means of an arm 92 engaging a horizontal arm 94 fixed to a sector 97 to drive the indicator spindle 99. The arrangement of the spring 54 and the linkage described permits the use of a uniformly-graduated dial. |
