An imaging forming apparatus comprising: an image bearing member configured to bear a developer image; a cleaning member that is disposed so as to contact with the image bearing member and is configured to clean a surface of the image bearing member; a belt member that is disposed so as to be able to contact with or separate from the image bearing member, and forms a transfer portion together with the image bearing member when contacting with the image bearing member; and contacting and separating means for setting a positional relationship between the belt member and the image bearing member to be a contacting state, where the belt member and the image bearing member contact with each other, or a separating state, where the belt member and the image bearing member separate from each other, wherein image formation is able to be executed in a plurality of modes each exhibiting different peripheral speed of the image bearing member, the image formation is executed after driving of the image bearing member is started, and the driving of the image bearing member is stopped after the image formation is ended, the imaging forming apparatus further comprising: control means for controlling the contacting and separating means so that the positional relationship between the image bearing member and the belt member, during a period from the start of the driving of the image bearing member to the start of the image formation, or during a period from the end of the image formation to the stop of the driving of the image bearing member, enters the separating state in a case where the image formation is executed when the peripheral speed of the image bearing member is a first peripheral speed, and enters the contacting state in a case where the image formation is executed when the peripheral speed of the bearing member is a second peripheral speed, which is different from the first peripheral speed.
