<p>Synthetic rubber, such as neoprene, that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Thiokol" and the diolefine types and their copolymers, or a rubber scrap containing natural and synthetic rubber is reclaimed by subjecting is to moist heat and preferably pressure in the presence of a monobasic aliphatic saturated acid of which the chain contains not less than four carbon atoms but does not contain hydroxyl groups, such as lauric and stearic acid. The acid may be dissolved in a solvent capable of swelling the rubber and the solvent may be evaporated after mixing with the rubber. In examples (1) a mixture of natural and synthetic rubber scrap is ground, mixed with a solution of lauric acid in naphtha and treated in a potheater for 5 hours at 190 lbs. live steam pressure, (2) ground neoprene G.N. tyre scrap is mixed with a solution of stearic acid in trichlorethylene and heated with water in an autoclan for 5 hours at 200 lbs. pressure. Neoprene, after treatment, is compatible with natural or other synthetic rubber, or natural, and is vulcanizable with sulphur.
