A receptacle connector 10A is provided with a receptacle ferrule 13 and a receptacle housing 11 that includes a cavity 17 for accommodating the receptacle ferrule 13 and a cavity 18 for accommodating a plug connector 20. The receptacle ferrule 13 includes an optical coupling surface (front surface 34a). The opening surface area of the cavity 17 in a cross-section orthogonal to the insertion direction for the plug connector 20 into the receptacle housing 11 is smaller than the opening surface area for the cavity 18 in a cross-section orthogonal to the insertion direction. In a second state after optical coupling, the optical coupling surface (front surface 34a) is positioned inside the cavity 17.
