[Class 80(ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVII] A device for controlling the movements of a machine member, particularly in a boring, facing, and milling machine, is characterized in that a single lever is adapted to control the movements of the member in at least three non-parallel direc tions, and is moved to effect the control ii directions substantially parallel to those in which the machine member is required to be moved. The single control lever 12, Fig. 2, is pivoted in a carrier member 11 rotatable itself about the axis 15<SP>1</SP> in a cylindrical member 10. This latter member is again rotatable about its longitudinal axis X, X'. The lever 12 in the position shown is moved backwards or forwards from its upright position to effect movement of the tool carriage supporting upright (or movement of the boring bar) of a boring, facing and milling machine in the same directions at varying speeds according to the amount of displacement of the lever from the normal. By rotation of the carrier 11 about the axis 15' the control lever may be brought to a position at right-angles to that shown where it may be used to control the movements of the work table of the machine in the direction OY. Rotation anticlockwise through 90 degrees of the member 10 from this position brings the control lever into a horizontal position where up and down movement causes displacements of the tool head of the machine in a vertical direction corresponding as before to the direction of movement of the lever. The control lever is connected within the rotatable carrier and housing by bevel gears 14, 15, 16, Figs. 5 and 6, to rotate three shafts 17, 21, 22, the rotation of all the shafts taking place irrespective of the position of the control levers, these shafts operate three rheostats for changing the speeds of motors driving the feed mechanism for the machine parts referred to above (or, in the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, control mechanical starting and speed-change gear (see below)). A projection 11<SP>1</SP> on the carrier 11 operates a press switch 28 or 29 according to the position occupied and in Fig. 2 is shown operating switch 28. Similarly a projection 10<SP>1</SP> provided on the flange of the member 10 closes a switch 26 (underneath the projection and therefore not visible in Fig. 2) or when moved to the position for vertical operation of the control lever closes the switch 27. The combination of switches thus operated renders portions of a control circuit, Fig. 8, "live," the heavy lines showing the circuit operated for the Fig. 2 position of the control lever 12, rheostat 25 being effective in this position of the control lever 12, while rheostats 23 and 24 although operated by their control shafts remain dead. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, states that the shafts 17, 21, 22 might control any other electrical hydraulic or mechanical starting, stopping and speed-changing devices. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
