Primary aromatic amine-aldehyde resins for use as anion-exchangers are modified by reacting the amine used or the resin with an alkylating agent which either contains a basic group or groups or receives a basic group by replacement of a reactive atom or group. Specified agents are ethylene-imine, N-dimethyl-b -chlorethylamine, epichlorhydrin. In examples: (1), (2), (5), the non-methylated resin obtained from m-phenylenediamine and formaldehyde according to example (1) of the parent Specification is heated with (1) epichlorhydrin followed by trimethylamine, (2) ethylene-imine vapour, (5) b -chlorethylamine hydrochloride and caustic soda; (3), (4), m-phenylenediamine is treated with (3) ethylene-imine, (4) N-dimethyl-b -chlorethylamine, then condensed with formaldehyde; (6) a mixture of m-phenylenediamine and epichlorhydrin is treated with trimethylamine, then condensed with formaldehyde.
