The filter includes a perforate centre tube 20, Fig. 3, welded at the bottom to an upwardly extending portion 22 of a lower cap member 23 and at the top to a threaded nipple 16 ; an apertured upper cap 32 around the nipple ; an annular gasket of a cork and resilient composition, 27 or 35, in each of the caps ; an outer expanded metal housing 37 first flattened and then formed into cylindrical shape to be received in the caps ; and a filter element 45, located between the centre tube and the outer housing, comprising a sheet of fine wire gauze mounted on a sheet of coarse wire gauze and formed into sinuous shape with inner cylindrical portions 51, Fig. 4, and outer cylindrical portions 50 alternating. The outer portions are preferably of larger diameter than the inner portions. Preferably a clamping nut 12, Fig. 3, carried by the nipple 16, engages the upper cap to compress the filter element and outer housing between the gaskets. The welding of nipple, centre tube and lower cap may be omitted and the nipple may be screwed directly into a threaded bore 55 in a head casting 56, Fig. 7, the parts being held together by a compression spring 86 operating between the bottom plate 83 of an outer housing 65 and a washer 82 bearing, through a gasket 81, against the lower end cap 23.
