PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cells equivalent to embryonic stem cells in adults.SOLUTION: Described herein are a method for treating cancer in a mammal, and an isolated multipotent mammalian stem cell (MASC) characterized by being negative with surface antigens CD44, CD45 and HLA classes I and II. Also described is a method for isolating MASCs comprising the steps of: (a) depleting from bone marrow monocytes CD45glycophorin Acells; (b) collecting CD45glycophorin Acells; (c) plating the collected CD45glycophorin Acells onto a matrix coating; and (d) culturing the plated cells in a culture medium supplemented with growth factors.SELECTED DRAWING: None
