PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor device which has a novel composition and achieves reduction in malfunction and low power consumption.SOLUTION: A semiconductor device comprises: a data retention circuit which has a flip-flop having a first latch circuit and a second latch circuit, and a shadow register having a nonvolatile storage part; and a control signal generating circuit for generating a first control signal provided to the first latch circuit and a second control signal provided to the second latch circuit. The shadow register is a circuit where saving or restoration of data is controlled between the first latch circuit and the second latch circuit based on a saving control signal or a restoration control signal. And the control signal generating circuit is a circuit for generating an L-level first control signal and an L-level second control signal during a period of saving or restoring data based on a clock signal, the saving control signal and the restoration control signal.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
