Molten metals such as iron and steel and alloys are desulphurized and deoxidized while their silicon content is simultaneously raised by means of briquettes to be submerged in the melts, the briquettes containing ferro-silicon as a major constituent and calcium oxide in the form of burnt lime, calcium carbonate or dolomite. The excess of silicon in the briquettes serves to increase the reactivity of the briquettes and, by dissolving in the melt, to increase its silicon content. A small amount of magnesium may also be incorporated in the briquette. The briquettes may be formed under pressure without a bonding agent or, alternatively bonding agents may be used such as crystal soda or the distillation residues of vegetable oils. Specifications 764,157 and 785,551 are referred to.
|
