751,290. Batteries. ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH CO. May 26, 1954, No. 15482/54. Class 53. A cell comprises an anode 15 of indium which may be of U-shape, a cathode 12 consisting of silver oxide or chloride, copper oxide, or oxide of mercury mixed with silver powder and graphite bound together with polyvinyl formal and an electrolyte 18 of a 25-50 per cent solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide to which may be added small quantities of tartaric acid or a tartrate, sugar, and lithium chloride. The insulating container 10 is closed by a liquid- and gas-tight cover 11. During the operation of the cell an indium hydroxide is formed which converts the electrolyte into a gel, this process being added by the presence of a tartrate and a sugar. Any oxide present on the indium anode can be removed electrolytically before the cell is assembled. |
