Class 44 A latch device 10 adapted to be mounted on the vertical face edge wall of a swing- ing door comprises an element 12 pivotally supported at the lower portion thereof, in combination with a keeper device 11 adapted to be mounted on a vertical face of a body pillar to which the free edge wall is latchable, the keeper device comprising a generally C-shaped body having a foot portion 19 having a substantially flat surface 20, a rib portion 21 and a hook-form head portion 22, the portion 19 supporting the element 12. When the head portion 22 engages the free end thereof to retain the element 12 when the head portion 22 engages the free end thereof to retain the door in latched condition, the keeper device having means to prevent disengagement of the latch device from the keeper device in a direction laterally of that in which the latch device is moved for normal engagement and disengagement with the keeper device. As shown, the means for prevening disengagement of the latch device, consists of a plate 28 which may be formed integral with the head portion 22 and which lies flush with the front face 26 thereof to form a pocket into which the element 12 of the latch device is adapted to project when the door is in the fully latched condition. The element 12 is provided with a roller 25 which during operation, engages the upper surface of the foot portion 19. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), the keeper device is provided with a substantially C -shaped plate which overlaps the adjacent outer face of the keeper device to form pockets for both ends of the latching element. The latter is provided with a roller, as in the first embodiment, the roller engaging an upper surface of the lower end of the C- shaped plate. The latching element is provided with a stop to limit its movement towards the C-shaped plate.
