The present invention discloses a methanolic extract which is obtained from the roots of Sechium edule (chayote) having the ability to induce a regulating environment for controlling an inflammatory process and repair tissue damage associated with hypertension, and thereby hypertension itself. In addition, said extract normalizes both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, reverts damage in mesangial and podocyte cells, and decreases edema and leukocyte permeation while restoring the hepatocyte morphology in the liver.
