Method for controlling a power unit (20) with combustion engine (MTH) and automatic gearbox (BV), which are connected via a clutch EMB), for one (12) of the wheelsets (12, 14) of a parallel hybrid vehicle (10) capable of running under the action of an electric motor (MELAR) provided for the other (14) of the wheelsets of the vehicle. The method comprises a phase (TDCR, DGMP, TDM) of deactivating the drive, which phase is initiated by a command to stop operation of the vehicle (TDCR) by turning off the ignition while the power unit (20) has its gear box (BV) commanded to operate in one of the modes of operation thereof in forward gear (D) or reverse gear (R) method for controlling a power unit with combustion engine and automatic gearboxwith its step-down ratios disengaged. Said deactivation phase comprises the sequencing of a step of engaging a step-down ratio (R1) of the gearbox (TCR1, TENG, TRI), and a step of forcing the clutch to close (TCEMB, TRF, TEMBF).
