Provided are a combustion apparatus having a flame rod for measuring flame currents and a control method thereof, which measure flame currents for minimizing the exhaust of contaminants by rapidly sensing the state change of flames and controlling an excess air ratio, thereby varying the amount of gas supplied. To achieve this, the present invention comprises: a burner; a blower which supplies air to the burner; a gas supply part which supplies gas and the air to the burner; a flame rod which measures the current of flames generated in the burner; and a control part which compares a current value detected in the flame rod with a preset reference current value to change the amount of gas supplied in the gas supply part in the case that the detected current value is out of the deviation of the reference current value and outputs a control signal to allow the detected current value to be within the deviation range of the reference current value.
