A vocoder processing method for an electronic device including a vocoder processing unit with a prefetch request unit that alternately encodes a transmission voice signal and decodes a reception voice signal repetitively at a prescribed cycle time, a memory that stores a decoding program and an encoding program, and a cache memory that temporarily retains decoding program data and encoding program data, the method comprising:
executing, by the vocoder processing unit, a first vocoder process; after executing the first vocoder process and before executing a second vocoder process, requesting, by the prefetch request unit, the cache memory to prefetch program data for the second vocoder process from the memory; executing the second vocoder process at the prescribed cycle time; when the first vocoder process decodes the reception voice signal, the second vocoder process encodes the transmission voice signal and the prefetched program data is the encoding program data; and when the first vocoder process encodes the transmission voice signal, the second vocoder process decodes the reception voice signal and the prefetched program data is the decoding program data.
