A friction hinge comprises a first hinge member 11, 14 having an internally cylindrical surface 14a and a second hinge member 21, 24, 27 having separate arcuate friction shoes 31, 33 adapted to be pressed apart into frictional engagement with the surface 14a by at least one wedge 35, 36 controlled by an adjustment bolt 37 disposed wholly within the confines of the internally cylindrical surface. The bolt is rotatable in a bore 38a of a bridge 38 riveted to the part 27 of the second hinge member, and has a head 37a located in a counterbore of the wedge 36 and a shank 37b screwed into the wedge 35. The friction shoes have friction linings 32, 34, which may be made of plastics material, and are pivoted on pins 25, 26 upstanding from the part 27.
