[Also in Division B5] Stringers for sliding clasp fasteners, Figs. 1, 2 and 3 (not shown), preferably made of nylon, have loops 35 and 36, 35<SP>1</SP> and 36<SP>1</SP> and 35<SP>11</SP> of substantially rectangular, smoothly curved and pointed configuration respectively. Fastener portions 34, 34<SP>1</SP> and 34<SP>11</SP> are provided and the ends of loops 35, 36 remote from heads 34 are formed in contact with one another, Figs. 1b, lc (not shown). The stringers are formed by means of a guide member 24, Fig. 5, a relatively movable die member 31, having teeth 22, and a fixed spigot 25. From the position shown, the guide 24 is swung in the direction of arrow (B) to bring filament 27 between surfaces 26, 26<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6 (not shown), of the spigot 25 and a tooth 22 respectively, the guide is then moved linearly to bring the filament beneath the spigot, Fig. 7 (not shown), and is then swung to a substantially upright position to form a coil of the stringer, Fig. 8 (not shown). During the last movement of the guide 24, a clamping member 37, which holds the already formed coils against the rearsides of the teeth 22, and a cover member 38, which prevents the coils rising off the teeth, are retracted so that the guide 24 may be moved in the direction of arrow (E) to bring the filament 27 behind the tooth next in line for coil formation, Fig. 4 (not shown), thereby completing the cycle of movements. Heads 34 are formed on each coil by a reciprocating hammer 29, spigot 25 acting as an anvil. The coil may be subjected to further shaping treatment by dies 40, 41, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), which engage the open and closed ends of the coils, and the open ends may also be pinched by a roller 42, Fig. 11 (not shown). The resulting coils are of substantially rectangular form, Fig. 1a (not shown). The stringers are removed from die member 31 by means of a wedge-shaped fork member 43, Fig. 12 (not shown). Die member 31 may be electrically heated and the stringer spray-cooled before removal therefrom.</p>
