<p>A water-based paint or a composition which yields a paint by addition of water comprises (a) 0 to 80% by wt. of water; (b) 18-100% by wt. of a mixture of pigments and alkali metal organosiliconates; the proportion of the latter is 0.07 to 1 part per part by wt. of the pigment; and (c) 0 to 2% by wt. of a binder other than an alkali metal organosiliconate and/or adjuvant substances usually present in paint. Up to 50% of the water may be replaced by an inert organic solvent which is miscible with water. The organosiliconates may be monomeric of the formula RSi(OH)2OM or polymeric having units RSiO(OM). R may be a monomeric silicon bonded radical, e.g. methyl, and M is preferably potassium. A proportion of the radicals R or the siloxane oxygen atoms may be replaced by divalent organic radicals bound to a further silicon atom.</p> |
