<p>A method for preparing p-aminophenol. Nitrobenzene is reduced by hydrogen in a liquid heterogeneous system at 60-120 deg.C containing 5-20% by weight of H2SO4 and Pt or Pd or both. The reaction product is a two-phase system: an aqueous phase containing p-aminophenol, and an organic phase containing enough nitrobenzene to keep the metal in suspension. The phases are separated and p-aminophenol recovered; the organic phase containing nitrobenzene and catalyst is recycled. A method for preparing p-aminophenol in high yield and purity. It avoids the disadvantage, found in old methods, that the catalyst sediments out in droplets of nitrobenzene; the recovery and recycling of the costly catalyst is easy.</p> |
