<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mitigate or eliminate the problem of uncombusted fuel being exhausted outside of a cylinder in cases when combustion of the air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber has been inadequate. <P>SOLUTION: In an expansion stroke, high voltage is applied to a spark plug 13 via a spark coil, igniting the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber with a spark discharge generated by the spark plug 13 to cause combustion. In the expansion stroke, a microwave electric field is generated in the combustion chamber before opening timing of an exhaust valve 16 coming during the final period of the expansion stroke, causing plasma to be generated and grow in the combustion chamber. An antenna 17 for radiating microwaves is disposed closer to a bottom dead point side than an intermediate point between a top dead point and the bottom dead point in the cylinder 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT</p> |
