PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hot-air type heater having a human body detecting means capable of recognizing only human bodies while preventing malfunctions due to hot air. SOLUTION: A burner 2 and a combustion chamber 8 are provided within a frame 1, with the combustion chamber 8 disposed in an air passage 5 penetrating the frame 1 longitudinally. Air flow passing through the air passage 5 is converted by a convection fan 6 into hot air, which is then blown out of an outlet 7. The human body detecting means 9 includes a human body sensor 10 disposed on the surface of the body 1 while oriented in the direction in which the hot air is blown out, and a timer means 11 which starts counting when the human body sensor 10 detects a person or when it detects no person. When the human body sensor 10 maintains a detection state or a non-detection state until the timer means 11 counts up, the presence/absence of a person is recognized. Also, the timer means 11 has a varying means 12 for varying set time according to the amount of combustion of the burner 2; optimal time is set depending on the amount of combustion, whereby stable detection of human bodies is made possible.
